Carer fatigue results in increased loads on health services and poor mental and physical health outcomes for carers and their loved ones. We report on a global review of academic, grey and institutional literature featuring non-clinical respite services. We review current models of care, compare their varied approaches and present a synthesis of current approaches. Given the lack of empirical and comparative data available, this evaluation of approaches is imperative to inform the provision of services.
